There are various types of temporary work in Poland

In this blog, we will explore what temporary work is, the different types it can take, and why it can be beneficial in certain cases.

Temporary work, also known as temporary employment or temporary labor, refers to performing tasks for a specific employer. The duration of this work is an essential element since it cannot exceed the limits set by regulatory acts, specifically the Temporary Employment Law. Temporary work can have seasonal, periodic, or one-time characteristics. The employer in this context is the respective institution or organization that signs an appropriate contract with the worker. The worker is referred to as a temporary employee. A temporary employee can enter into a fixed-term employment contract or a civil law contract (a contract for services).

Proposals on the job market

Currently, there is a multitude of offers on the job market in Poland for job seekers. For some, hourly pay is a key factor determining their interest in a job. For others, proximity to the company is important, while some look at elements such as subsidized accommodation and meals. But is that all? No, potential candidates are increasingly looking at the company’s reputation, brand, and the possibility of permanent employment after the contract with the recruiting agency ends. Candidates also consider the job’s complexity and the availability of overtime hours, if applicable.

Which skills should temporary job seekers develop?

It all depends on the employer since each case needs to be considered individually. There are vacancies where the employer explicitly expects motivated individuals who are seeking seasonal work. Some employers view temporary work as a source of excellent candidates with whom they want to collaborate on a long-term basis. Temporary work is often seen as a time to assess candidates for potential permanent positions. Agencies search for workers without experience but also those who are professionals seeking a change.

Where to find temporary work?

Today, there are many employment agencies on the market that can help you find a job. If needed, an agency representative will not only find suitable job offers but also assist in resume writing. During the interview with the candidate, the agency will identify strengths and weaknesses and prepare the candidate for the interview process. Another excellent way to find work is through recommendations from people who are already employed by the same employer. Additionally, you can reach out to the Employment Center in Poland, where employers post their job vacancies, or monitor telegram communities, Viber, and Facebook groups.

Pros and cons of temporary work

The advantages lie primarily in the opportunity for personal development and the possibility of finding one’s dream job. It is worth mentioning the ease of getting employed in temporary positions. A crucial aspect is the flexibility of work schedules, the ability to adjust one’s own schedule, and the chance to showcase one’s skills. Safety is another benefit as the agency acts as the main employer, ensuring timely payment of wages to temporary workers. The agency is responsible for finding suitable job vacancies and verifying candidates’ skills (through minimum manual tests, etc.), thereby avoiding candidate disappointment and turnover for the employer. Workers can easily get in touch with the agency or coordinator at any time.

Drawbacks of temporary work may include the maximum employment duration provided by the agency, which is limited to 18 months. If the employer decides not to hire the temporary worker, the contract with them is terminated. Another disadvantage may be the lack of additional benefits that the agency does not offer, but the employer does. Additionally, temporary workers may not be assigned to perform particularly hazardous tasks.

How to prepare for an interview?

Preparation is essential for every interview. From our experience, it is best to discuss your resume and your experiences with the agency. Candidates can highlight their strengths and weaknesses, and the agency can suggest changes to the resume or offer advice on how to dress appropriately.

Currently, there are many instructional videos available that demonstrate what to do and what not to do during an interview. It is crucial to remember that first impressions are made only once, and it is worth preparing for them.

Important elements before the interview include practicing in front of a mirror or with a family member. It’s essential to get enough rest, remember to smile, and maintain a positive attitude.

About earnings

This is a highly individual matter and depends on various factors. It depends on whether the person lives alone, with parents, or has come from abroad and needs to support themselves. It also depends on the level of support, obligations, and specific circumstances.

In 2022, the average salary in the business sector was 6,650 zlotys (increased by 13%), in the business and administration sector – 6,350 zlotys (increased by 11.7%), and in the overall economy – 5,540 zlotys.

Legal aspects of temporary work

The contract should specify, among other things, the type of work, the workplace, working hours, and the start date. The document should include elements such as the date of contract conclusion, employment conditions, and payment terms, among others. However, if you come to a recruitment agency, they will handle all legal matters, and you can be at ease regarding these aspects.

Tips for job seekers

In each agency, there are professionals who, after the interview and verification of the candidate’s experience, can offer solutions. Don’t be afraid of such interviews. Before starting to look for work, think about whether you want temporary work or a long-term position. Consider the type of company you want to work for – a corporation or a family business. Do you want the option to relocate? What type of contract are you interested in? It’s important to talk about your concerns and ask questions during the interview or while speaking with agency staff.
