Challenges and opportunities related to the employment of people with disabilities in the Silesian labour market

Agnieszka Kolanowska, General Manager of Smart Solutions Polska, was actively involved in the creation of a study on the situation of people with disabilities on the Silesian labour market. This is not the first time we have been involved in this topic – last year we organised an HR Coffee Break event under the slogan ‘Give everyone a chance – The importance of employing people with disabilities‘. We are now continuing our activities by actively developing the theme of support and integration of people with disabilities in the workplace.

A study commissioned by the Provincial Labour Office in Katowice reveals significant challenges and opportunities in employing people with disabilities. The aim of the study was to understand what factors influence employers’ decisions to employ these people and what institutional support can improve their employment situation.

Benefits of employing people with disabilities

Employers who have chosen to employ people with disabilities often emphasise their reliability and loyalty. The presence of such employees can also have a positive impact on the morale of the entire team, motivating others to work more committed. An additional advantage is the possibility of obtaining funding from the National Fund for Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons (PFRON), which can significantly reduce employment costs.

Employing people with disabilities also has a positive impact on the image of the company, which is seen as open to diversity and socially committed.

Obstacles to employing people with disabilities

Despite these benefits, many employers are still concerned about hiring people with disabilities. Among the most common concerns are the difficulties of adapting workplaces and the higher costs associated with employment. There is also the problem of stereotypical thinking that people with disabilities are less qualified.

Another challenge is bureaucracy. Complicated administrative procedures can discourage employers from working with people with disabilities.

Institutional support and activation programmes

Support from institutions, such as the PFRON, is crucial in the context of increasing the employment of people with disabilities. The subsidies and training programmes offered help both employers and people with disabilities themselves. Activation programmes, run by various institutions, help to better prepare people with disabilities for the labour market by offering counselling and training support.

Recommendations and proposals for new solutions

The experts participating in the study emphasise the need to raise awareness among employers about the potential of persons with disabilities. They also recommend simplifying administrative procedures and increasing the availability of information on the employment of these people. It is also important to promote good practices and educate employers on diversity management.

Our manager, Agnieszka Kolanowska, actively participated in the creation of this survey, which demonstrates our commitment to the labour market issues of people with disabilities. Our company, Smart Solutions, not only analyzes current trends, but also actively supports the inclusion of people with disabilities by organizing events such as last year’s HR Coffee Break and developing this important topic in our operations.
