Why should you work with a recruiter?

In my work, I encounter different candidate attitudes every day. An interesting phenomenon is that the ‘model candidate’ attitude, which used to be obvious, is now not extremely common. In the past, it was more common for me to encounter situations where candidates actively waited to be contacted, picked up the phone after the first beep and regularly reminded via text message, hoping to speed up the decision-making process.

I am an advocate of balance and partnership. Both candidate and recruiter should engage equally in the recruitment process. Both parties are investing their time and effort, so mutual understanding and communication are key.

Lack of professionalism in the candidate-recruiter relationship

Unfortunately, I am seeing more and more cases where candidates do not take set appointments seriously. Sometimes a candidate makes an appointment with a potential employer and then simply fails to show up. In such situations, a short message stating that the meeting needs to be postponed is all that is needed, yet I often receive explanations that the candidate is at the seaside, in the mountains or shopping at the time.

Professionalism and respect towards the other party are extremely important. Shortening the distance and being open in communication are welcome, but basic courtesy, answering the phone or informing about unavailability are issues that build a positive image. It is a kind of business card of the candidate that shows the whole range of his or her soft competences, so important for the final selection.

Recruiters offer a lot of added value to candidates. Here are some key benefits:

  1. Access to hidden job offers: Recruiters often have access to vacancies that are not publicly advertised. They may know vacancies that perfectly match your profile before they even appear online.
  2. Recruitment support: With experience, recruiters can help you prepare your CV, provide valuable interview tips and provide feedback from employers.
  3. Negotiating terms and conditions of employment: Recruiters are skilled at negotiating terms and conditions of employment, including salary and benefits, which can be particularly useful for a candidate.
  4. Security and confidentiality: Processes run by professional recruitment agencies ensure that your data is treated with due confidentiality.
  5. Professional development: a recruiter can act as a partner in your long-term career development, supporting you in planning your next steps and helping you to build your professional network.

Summary

These days, the ‘model candidate’ attitude is no longer as common as it once was. Professionalism, a partnership approach and open, courteous communication are key elements of a successful relationship with a recruiter. Candidates who nurture relationships, answer the phone and respect appointments build a positive image in the eyes of recruiters. In return, recruiters offer access to hidden job opportunities, support in the recruitment process, assistance in negotiations and long-term professional development, while ensuring the confidentiality of the entire process.
